Is Kendrick Lamar Taking A Page Out Of Beyonce's Book?
This past Thursday, March 30, saw Kendrick Lamar release the audio and visual for "HUMBLE." The song is lifted from his upcoming project to be released on April 07, 2017. As I was exiting the subway I saw an alert on my phone asking me if I saw the new K-Dot. In an unusual manner, I quickly searched because such a question from this particular friend must mean that it was something big. What I searched and opened turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Prior to seeing and hearing this I was never much of a Kendrick Lamar fan. Of course, I acknowledged his talent and his prominence within the industry but his authentic Hip-Hop was just not my taste. All of this changed with the release of "HUMBLE."
Upon watching and listening to "HUMBLE." I thought to myself, this feels very Beyoncé. Yes Beyoncé, from an artistic and business perspective it really does. The video feels very much like "Formation"; there was dark undertone to the video, both literally(filter) and figuratively(messages) speaking. Sonically, the Mike-WiLL Made-It production instantly hooked me as with "Formation." Even the title of the song and the way the title is stylized in capital letters seemed very Beyoncé.
On the business side, the way Lamar's team is rolling out this project, with elusive release dates, is very Beyoncé. I can very well be reaching with these comparisons but it would not surprise me that after working with each other on 'Lemonade' Mrs. Carter and the people behind her reached out to K-Dot once again.
